Trolleys! Are they just a load of pants?

Sue writes asking about the derivation of the term "trolleys". She knows the expression is used to mean underpants, but where the heck does it come from?

We found out it's quite a recent expression. Possibly originally from the Royal Navy, originating in the late 20th century and gaining popularity in the 70's and 80's. We found it's possibly a shortening of "trolley wags" which is Cockney Rhyming Slang for "bags" - bags being another word for trousers.

So there's some confusion over whether trolleys means pants or trousers. In our household it means trousers but there's no doubt other people use it to mean pants!

What do you think folks?

Used in BBC's series New Tricks by Tube (Underground rail) maintenance man in referring to dead man's trousers.

As in: "He had piss and shit running down his trolleys...."

Trolley wags = bags = slang for old fashionable (1900s?) Oxford bags = voluminous trews. It's old. Not underpants. Which Brits just call pants = adams.

Could be confusing.

Trolley and Tram = Ham.

Trolley and Truck = F**k.

There's not much real cockney left in London. Go find an old geyser to natter wiv.

I find this wind incredibly made up, maybe the bloody Tom, Dick and Harry is accurate, but the chuffin' translator is barely updated, so it's very rathead, I will use anovver translator, updated daily, ter Rabbit and Pork ter those thumb-suckin' weirdos talkin' 'round wif a shitty accent.
