Cockney Rhyming Slang needs your help!

by Gordon 18. July 2010 09:23

Help! We're easily the most popular and respected Cockney dictionary on the Internet - and that means we get a huge amount of contributions of slang, comments, and emails. We're drowning!

If you have an interest in the Cockney language, have a little bit of spare time, and would be willing to help us out, please get in touch and let us know. The work will obviously be unpaid (except for much kudos, links to your site etc etc). It will involve as much or as little work as you can manage. Here are the main things that need doing:

  • review new slang contributions which come in every day - delete duplicates and spam, and remove obvious "Mockney"
  • review blog comments, approving useful comments but deleting spam
  • write new blog posts when interesting emails come in

Do you fancy any or all of the above? If you love language, have a background in London slang or at least some first hand knowledge of it, then please contact us and get involved.

MY CHILDHOOD RHYME FOR SHIT WAS NOT 'BRAD PIT' - 'E 'AD YET TO BE BORN!
WE USED 'VICIOUS TIT' = "I DON'T GIVE A VICIOUS TIT WHAT YOU THINK...." ETC.
I UNDERSTAND THAT ALL LANGUAGES EVOLVE AND FEW MORE QUICKLY THAN COCKNEY RHYMES.
IT REMAINS IMPORTANT NOT TO MOVE TOO FAST OR THE USED LANGUAGE IS DILUTED; SEVERAL GENERATIONS OF THE SAME FAMILY SPEAKING A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE !!!
AT THE RISK OF SEEMING RACIST I WOULD ALSO POINT OUT THAT ALL THE RHYME USERS I EVER MET WERE CAUCASIAN - AN ASIAN USING COCKNEY RHYMES WOULD HAVE BEEN ANATHEMA.

Tom Tit is the term we use for shit in our house.
On the other side if you're doing number 1's you're going for a Snakes Hiss.

CLASSIC COCKNEY USAGE - COUNTING.

FOUR (4) WAS ALWAYS A ROATH - I KNOW NOT WHY.  IT WAS A RARE 'INSIDER' TERM.

"I'LL GIV YA A ROATH FOR IT". FOUR POUNDS WAS A LOT OF MONEY WHEN I WAS YOUNG. I WAS EDUCATED IN THE BOROUGH BEAUFOY TECHNICAL SCHOOL IN LAMBETH AND SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON 'THE WALK'

There I was sitting round the annie myria warming me plates of meat when there was a dickory dock on the rory 'o more and me old raspberry began to beat. Anyway it turns out to be me old china plate and he gives it "if yer trouble and strife aint in what about going down the rub a dub dub". So I puts on me round the ouses, almond rocks, daisy roots, dickie dirt, peckham rye, gives me german bands and boat race a kybosh and combs me barnet fair and puts on me john 'o groat and off we goes for a ball and chalk down the frog and toad. When we gets to the rub a dub I orders a pint of pigs ear and goes up the apples and pears for a jimmy riddle, when I gets down me china is on the dog and bone so I have to get out the nelson eddies to settle. A bit later I buys a linen draper to find out whats on the dolly mixtures nothing worth seeing so I goes home to uncle ned.
